On 12 September 2011, Bernice Mary Bates (USA, b. 30 June 1920) received an official Guinness World Records award for being the Oldest yoga teacher, following one of her regular classes at Mainlands Retirement Community in Pinellas Park, Florida, USA.

Bernice was still an active yoga instructor at the incredible age of 91. At the time of her certificate presentation, she had been teaching the exercise for 51 years.
 
The inspirational lady says that yoga has been a rewarding part of her life and has kept her fit and flexible until the age of 91 years.
 
 
The current record for the oldest registered yoga teacher is held by Ida Herbert (Canada, b. 21 August 1916), who remains an active instructor at the age of 95 years 270 days (as of 16 May 2012).
 
Ida retired from a 20-year full-time career teaching yoga at the YMCA in Orillia, Ontario, Canada, but continues to teach a weekly class in the Bayshore Village area of Ontario.
 
She says her secret to long life is avoiding junk food, gardening, a glass of sherry after lunch and flirting.
