During their annual cruise across the Mediterranean Sea this weekend, American boyband Backstreet Boys broke the Guinness World Records title for the Most nationalities in a Jacuzzi, with thirty people from a range of countries, including France, Switzerland and Italy.

The band – made up of singers A.J., Howie, Brian, Kevin and Nick – wanted to organise a fun record attempt to engage and excite their fans on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship during the four-day trip in Florence, Italy.

The record was verified by official Guinness World Records adjudicator Rob Molloy, who flew out from London especially for the attempt. He said: “It’s always fun to adjudicate record attempts like this one. There was a great atmosphere on board the cruise ship and everybody got involved to support those taking part. Many of those involved were excited to be meeting their childhood heroes.”

Those involved in the record attempt had to show their passports to prove their nationality and were required to remain in the hot tub for a minimum of five minutes.

A.J. McLean said: “It has been great to take part in a Guinness World Records attempt and to do it with our fans has been amazing. We felt like we wanted to do something together and to add world record to our achievements is incredible.”

The Backstreet Boys bettered the previous record of 26 which was set by Jacuzzi Outlet, in Moraira, Spain, on 18 November 2012.

The Backstreet Boys also hold a Guinness World Records title for their achievements in music. Their album Millennium, released in 1999, had sold 12.25 million copies in the USA alone by October 2014: the Best-selling album in the USA by a boyband. The Grammy-nominated album was certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments of 13 million units on 7 February 2001.
