Guinness World Records has teamed up with The Reading Agency charity to support the Summer Reading Challenge 2015 and have introduced the exciting new theme “Record Breakers”.
Since 1999, the Summer Reading Challenge has been the UK’s biggest annual reading promotion for children aged 4-11 and encourages children to read six library books of their choice over the summer holidays - entirely for free.
This year’s Record Breakers theme is innovative in that it brings together fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore astonishing real-life achievements and even set a Guinness World Records title this summer.
It is easy to get involved: kids simply have to visit their local library where staff and volunteers will give them themed materials and incentives. The Summer Reading Challenge has already began in Scotland and has an official launch date in Northern Ireland on July 1, with England and Wales to follow on Saturday 11 July.
This includes a fun poster with record-breaking themed scented stickers to collect, giving young readers an opportunity to discover weird and wacky records from around the world.
Jenny Heller, VP, Publishing, for Guinness World Records, says: “We know how much children look forward to discovering new Guinness World Records facts and achievements every year, so to bring a record-breaking opportunity to the heart of this reading challenge is an honour for us as we mark our 60th anniversary.
There are medals and certificates for those who finish all six books as well as Augmented Reality games within the material to make sure the challenge is as enjoyable as it is educational.
By joining the challenge, each child could also become a Guinness World Records title holder as The Summer Reading Challenge is attempting to achieve the Most pledges received for a reading campaign.
