The historic Friedrichstadt-Palast theatre in Berlin celebrated its new building's 30th anniversary in super sweet style earlier this week.

Located in the heart of Berlin’s East End Theatre district, the venue has often been referred to as the biggest show palace in Europe, with the likes of Shirley Bassey, Joe Cocker, Phil Collins, Hildegard Knef and Liza Minnelli having all appeared on its stage over the years.

To raise awareness of the theatre’s birthday, as well as thank guests for their loyalty over the years, the venue organised a record attempt for Longest Line of doughnuts.

The theatre opted to use Berliners for the record bid- a North German take on the humble donut, which is typically made from sweet yeast dough fried in fat or oil, with a marmalade or jam filling finished off with an iced top.

The Palace offered a raffle of 300 exclusive backstage tickets to the general public to view the world record attempt along with an equipment show designed especially for the anniversary celebration, and an opportunity to tuck into the donuts during a special party buffet which was opened by actress Julia Richter and the theatre’s director Berndt Schmidt.

Provided by local bakery Bäckerei Laufer, a total of 6,448 doughnuts were used for the attempt , which were laid out in a line measuring 561.4 m (1841 ft 10 in), which weaved its way around the venue’s huge foyer.

Over 320 kg of yeast dough, 150 kg of fruity strawberry jam, 1,000 eggs, 40 kg of creamy sugar frosting and 200 kg of flour, was used to create the record breaking line.

Speaking after the attempt, André Puchta, Head of Press for the Friedrichstadt-Palast said: "We are glad having hosted such an event at Friedrichstadt-Palast. "Including the Guinness World Records attempt in our building’s 30 th anniversary celebration and actually breaking the record of “The longest line of doughnuts (Berliner)” added the “extra sweet flavor” to this event. We are proud being a record holder and thus being “Officially Amazing”.
