Six-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy has today announced his retirement from cycling.

The 37-year-old Scot had been widely expected to compete at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow but felt "to go on for another year would be one too far".

As well as achieving the record for Most Olympic Cycling gold medals won at one Olympic Games having picked up three at the 2008 Games in Beijing (a record also achieved by Paul Masson (France) in 1896, Francisco Verri (Italy) in 1906, and Robert Charpentier (France) in 1936), Sir Chris also set records for Fastest cycle 500 m unpaced flying start (male), Fastest Olympic 1 km Standing Start Cycling race win, and also has the distinction of being the first sport cyclist to be knighted.
