Faster than a speeding lacrosse player?

Paul Statchuk certainly hopes so.

The Toronto resident aims to be part of record-breaking history on Sunday, when he runs the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon attempting the fastest marathon in a full lacrosse kit.

Joining him in attempts at history are two other runners: David Hiddleston and Brian Pressnail. The two of them will attempt records for the fastest half marathon dressed as a fruit and fastest marathon in full baseball kit, respectively.

The number to beat for both Stutchak and Pressnail's attempts will be 4 hours, while Hiddleston will need to surpass 1 hr 31 min 44 sec. Guinness World Records will have an official adjudicator on-site to determine whether Statchuk & Co. make it into the books - again.

“There are so many different ways to participate in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have Paul take part in the race to break a (record),” said John Doig, Senior Vice President, Toronto Region, Scotiabank. “We welcome back Paul Statchuk and cheer him on in this undertaking.”

World records have been broken at each of the last three Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathons

Statchuk is no stranger to breaking records. Last year he broke the mark for fastest marathon dressed in an ice hockey kit – hockey stick included – at this very race, crossing the finish line at 4 hr 8 min 43 sec and earning a place on page 8 of the Guinness World Records 2014 book. At a different race, also last year, Statchuck ran the fastest marathon in an American football kit, at 3 hr 45 min 30 sec.

“Lacrosse requires slightly less equipment and will certainly be less restrictive than hockey equipment, so I feel as though I have a good idea of what it will feel like come race day,” said Statchuk. “Ideally I’d like to come in under 3:40.”

Hiddleston, meanwhile, is no stranger to history at the Waterfront Marathon either. In the 2011 race, he ran the fastest half marathon as a mascot, dressed as Jefferson the Dog, mascot for MyNextRace.com. He finished in a still-record time of 1 hr 46 min 27 sec.

All races kick off Sunday and record verification of all three quests will be confirmed next week. For more information, be sure to visit the Toronto Waterfront Marathon web site.
