With superhuman speed, The Avengers has flown past the
previous world record to take in the fastest $1 billion box office
film gross.
The film passed the $1 billion mark 10 days after its release in
the US and most other countries.
The Avengers also
recently set another Guinness World Record for the biggest US box
office opening weekend, when it pulled in $200.3 million
(£124.2 million) in ticket sales.
The superhero film is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed
by Walt Disney Pictures.
Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett
Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L Jackson all
star in the Joss Whedon-directed production.
The previous record holder, The Lord of the Rings: The Return
of the King, passed the $1 billion mark at the international
box office after nine weeks and four days following its release in
December 2003.
