The University of Illinois achieved a record breaking delight last Friday by creating 330 gallons of smoothie.

On a hot and humid first day of school for several thousand freshman and returners at the university, dining staff staff created the ideal treat - a giant quantity of strawberry and pineapple smoothie that provided enough for all students.

Beginning at 8:30 am, staff began blending 600 pounds of strawberries, 960 pounds of yogurt and 105 gallons of pineapple juice.

Stationed inside a refrigerated truck outside the university's Memorial Stadium, the team of blenders worked in a well organised production line to blitz through the ingredients and four hours later had transferred the smoothie mixture into a measuring tank festooned in University of Illinois colours.

At 12:30pm an adjudicator for Guinness World Records concluded measuring the 1,249 liters (330 US gallons) of smoothie and announced that a record had been achieved. world_s_largest_smoothie_2.jpg

Orange and blue balloons were released into the sky, air horns were sounded while local Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps rang a bell to celebrate the occasion.

Moments later the thirsty crowd of several thousand gathered around the measuring tank was able to literally taste a new Guinness World Record for the largest smoothie.
