Estonian Excellence

This Sunday is National Day in Estonia and to honour this, here is a list of our current Guinness World Records held by this brilliant Baltic state:

Fastest wife carrying race
The fastest time to complete the 253.5-m (831-ft 8-in) obstacle course of the World Wife-Carrying Championships, held annually in Sonkajärvi, Finland (first held 1992) is 56.9 seconds by Margo Uusarj and Sandra Kullas (both Estonia) on 1 July 2006. This is the fastest time achieved since the rule for a minimum wife-weight was introduced in 2002.

Highest alcohol content in a drink
When Estonia was independent between the two world wars, the Estonian Liquor Monopoly marketed 98 per cent alcohol distilled from potatoes (196 proof in US terminology).

Largest matchstick
The largest matchstick measured 6.235 m (20 ft 5 in) long with a cross section of 27.5 cm (10.8 in). It was made by Estonian Match Ltd and unveiled and struck at the Ugala Theatre, Viljandi, Estonia on 27 November 2004.

Longest marathon, croupier
The longest croupier marathon was 48 hours by Intan Pragi (Estonia) at the Olympic Casino, Tallin, Estonia on 18-20 February 2005.

Fastest relay 100 x one kilometer walking
A relay of 100 x 1km was walked by 100 individuals in 8 hours 45 min 40.8 sec at Sarevere stadium, Järvamaa, Estonia on 2 May 1998.
