Red nose day

Red Nose Day has become one of the largest charity telethons in the world. The first Red Nose Day was staged by Comic Relief on this day in 1988 and raised £15 million that year. Records are often attempted to raise funds and here are some of Comic Relief's current database entries:

Largest G-string / thong
The world's largest g-string was unveiled at the Body Shop's UK Headquarters in Littlehampton, West Sussex, on 15 March 2001. The giant pair of white and red cotton thong underwear, measuring approximately 9.2 meters by 4.6 metres (9.8 by 4.9 yds), was presented by the Body Shop in conjunction with Comic Relief's "Pants to Poverty" campaign.

Most lines connected to one telephone number
Between 11 and 12 March 2005, the donation telephone number in the UK for the charitable television broadcast 'Red Nose Day 05' was connected, via call centres, to 14,368 live agents. The event was organised by Comic Relief (UK), with the technology provided by BT Plc (UK).

Most people with spray painted hair, multiple locations
The most people with spray-painted hair in multiple locations is 5,274 at 12 venues across the UK, and was organised for Wella UK Ltd to raise money for Comic Relief on 11 March 2005.

Oldest child on television
Although now in semi-retirement, Janette Tough (UK, b. 16 May 1947)
regularly played the role of pre-teen schoolboy Jimmy Krankie alongside her husband Ian (UK), who plays Jimmy's father. Although she celebrated her 60th birthday in 2007, Tough, at a diminutive 1.3 m (4 ft 5 in) tall, still occasionally dons her schoolboy cap and short trousers - most recently on the 2007 Comic Relief/Proclaimers (UK) single "(I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles". In 2003, Jimmy Krankie was voted by readers of the Glasgow Herald as the Most Scottish Person in the World.

Largest single donation to a telethon
A cheque presented by Sainsbury's to Comic Relief during 'The Night of Comic Relief' on BBC1, 16 March 2001, was to the value of £4.5 million (US$6.4 million). The money had been raised through the sales of noses, comic relief products and staff fundraising.

05 February 2008
