The largest gathering of people dressed as Smurfs in 24 hours at multiple venues is 4,891 and was organized by Sony Pictures in 11 countries to celebrate the release of the film The Smurfs, on 25 June 2011.
Sony Pictures were looking for a newsworthy event to help attract media coverage for the global release of their 3D 2011 film 'The Smurfs'.
Sony Pictures created "Global Smurfs Day" on the birthday of Smurfs creator Peyo. To celebrate "Global Smurfs Day" Sony Pictures gathered thousands of people across 11 different countries and four continents to attempt a Guinness World Record for the Largest Gathering of Smurfs. With nearly five thousand people dressed in white trousers and blue face paint, a new record was set, a media story was created and a successful film launch executed.
