The Brief

The Netherlands has approx. 1 million cardiovascular disease patients and 107 associated daily fatalities. The Dutch Heart Foundation are committed to fighting this and increasing the cardiac arrest survival rate from 10-15% to 25%. They invest significantly in programs aimed at raising awareness in 14-15 year olds based on findings which indicate that when young teens learn about CPR & AED, it’s increasingly likely that as adults, they will sign up as Civilian Aid Workers.

One current initiative is to make CPR education compulsory in secondary schools by submitting a petition to the Education Secretary. Since the introduction of new international guidelines highlighting the importance of CPR combined with AED to increase survival; the foundation has been emphasizing this message through pilot training sessions across 50 secondary schools in the Netherlands.

The Solution

Following an enthusiastic response from the pilot, The Dutch Heart Foundation wanted to raise widespread awareness across the Dutch population, encourage more students to get involved and make them feel proud. The Largest AED training session saw over 3,000 students and adults come together to apply CPR & AED. To make it truly unforgettable and engaging for students, the attempt took place at a popular events complex, was presented by a well-known TV personality, and a famous DJ played beats that replicated that of a heartbeat to assist students. The Dutch population were also invited to express their support by signing the petition for compulsory training.
