Largest football tournament
For the second year in a row, the Copa Telmex received the Guinness World Record for the largest football tournament in the world.
With 10,457 teams totalling 172,692 players, the tournament was played around all the Mexican states starting in February and ending on 30 November 2008.
The winning teams were: U.N.A.M. in the male tournament and Aztecas in the female tournament.
Copa Telmex has the aim of integrating the Mexican youth and improving the quality of life of the participants.
Copa Telmex is one many projects the Fundacion Telmex is working on, with the aim of contributing to the development of the Mexican society, in this case, through sports, and on 2 December, Guinness World Records adjudicator Carlos Martinez, presented the President of Fundacion Telmex, Arturo Elias Ayub, the certificate recognizing the new record.
During the ceremony, Arturo Elias challenged his own tournament to improve itself and to keep on growing in an attempt to achieve a third Guinness World Record with the future Copa Telmex 2009.
