Largest fruit mosaic
A mosaic full of the scent of fruits set a new Guinness World Record on 1 December 2008 in Pingyuan County, Guangdong province, China. It beat the previous record comfortably by 372,525 pieces of fruit, and measured measuring 2,220 m² (23895 ft²).
The event was organized by the Pingyuan County Committee of the Communist Party of China and People’s Government of Pingyuan County in celebration of the Fourth Navel Orange Tourism Festival. The county is famous for its navel oranges and al the fruits used for the mosaic were locally grown. The mosaic consisted of 349,200 navel oranges, 18,172 apples and 5,153 pomelos. It is 60 m (196 ft 10 in) long and 37 m (121 ft 4 in) wide, with a total area of 2,220 m² (23895 ft²). The whole mosaic depicted the county’s flower along with the name and date of the event, expressing a warm welcome to everyone to the county.
The creators of the mosaic were students from Pingyuan Middle School. More than 1,000 students were very excited to take part in this record breaking event. It was a great pleasure for the spectators to see the first Guinness World Record set in the county. Angela Wu, Guinness World Records adjudicator enjoyed the fragrant smell of the mosaic during the presentation of the certificate commemorating this event.
