Tallest structure built with interlocking plastic bricks
The tallest structure ever built with interlocking plastic bricks
On Sunday, 5 October 2008 at 12.10 am, it finally happened. After four intensive days of building, the last brick was put on the gigantic LEGO® structure. Following that moment, exact measurements were taken on the presence of Guinness World Records adjudicator Carlos Martinez who declared that, with an height of exactly 29.48 meters (96 ft 8 in), the tower in the centre of Vienna had reached a new Guinness World Record!
With the assistance of over 1,500 pupils and hundreds of families with kids of all ages, the ambitious goal could be reached and the existing Guinness World Record be beaten. Sheltered under many building tents, the LEGO® fans braved rain and strong wind and imperturbably put brick on brick from 2 to 5 October.
About 500.000 8-stud LEGO® bricks were necessary to reach the tallest height in the history of plastic bricks building.
Christian Korbes, Vice President Marketing of LEGO® Central Europe, said: “I’ve already been to the LEGO® tower building in Vienna in 1990 and we’ve been unbelievably proud of reaching an height of 18.70 meters. Nobody would ever have dared to dream that we can reach a height of nearly 30 meters in 2008. But the joy of building with LEGO® bricks as well as the wish to beat existing records seems to be an unbelievably strong motor for young and old. I sincerely congratulate all of the builders, who assisted in Vienna, on their fantastic achievement.”
