On 31 August 2008, Kaoru Ishikawa, Guinness World Records adjudicator, visited sunny Krakow, Poland to adjudicate the record for the largest dance by couples.  The event was organised by TVN television at the Market Square in Krakow Old Town.

On the day of the event, a long queue of the people willing to participate in the record attempt was formed at the registration site outside the square. The event was also joined by Polish celebrities from the popular TV programme ‘You Can Dance’ and hundreds of screaming teenagers were there to observe their favourite dancers in action.

After a short dance lesson to learn the correct steps of the cha cha cha, the record attempt began at precisely 6:50pm.  Ms. Ishikawa, along with the stewards ensured all couples were dancing the correct steps for the minimum required 5 minutes. The final count of the participants came to 1,635 couples, which successfully beat the previous record of 1,178 couples.  Screams and Cheers from the participants echoed in the square when Ms. Ishikawa declared the new Guinness World Record live on television.

It was a perfect event for the people of Krakow to mark the end of the summer holidays.
