Largest car mosaic
Anyone flying over the fields of Warwickshire on the afternoon of the 31 August 2008 must have seen it. A massive mosaic -almost a kilometre long -spelling the name Colin McRae alongside the Scottish flag, made entirely of Subaru cars.Colin McRae, the Scottish rally driver who diedtragically in a helicopter accident in 2007, inspired more than four thousand Subaru enthusiasts to descend en masse to the Prodrive circuit at Warwick to form a tribute to his life and excellence on the rally track.
Working from a computer-designed layout, an expert team of volunteer marshals guided car after car (after car, after car) into place, slowly locking in a letter at a time until finally an incredible 1,068 cars were in place. With a helicopter on hand to shoot aerial photos, the mosaic - too big to be seen fromground level -came clearly into view, and this monumental achievement earned the new Guinness World Record for the largest car mosaic.
Putting more than a thousand cars into place is no easy feat, and it's a realtestament to the talent and good nature of the marshals who were able to arrange the mosaicsoquickly and neatly. But praise is also due to the carloadsof Subarulovers (and families and friends) who exhibited exemplary patience in queuing totake their place in the record attempt. As a testament to how loved - andmissed -Colin McRae is, there can be none finer.
