Largest Mexican Wave
23 August – Bristol, Tennessee
Moving smoothly around the ½ mile of Bristol Motor Speedway’s track, 157,574 pairs of arms and hands “waved” hello to a historic mark by setting a new stadium-style “Largest Mexican Wave” Guinness World Record. Fans gathered to watch the Sharpie 500, one of NASCAR professional racing’s premier events, participated in the record attempt. When the “TUMS” wave began just after 8:00pm, the participant’s rising and falling arms resembled a wall of sea anemones quietly swaying underwater. However, the wave soon gained energy and quickly rolled throughout the bleachers, charging toward a Guinness World Record with a sound as loud and impressive as the 43 NASCAR vehicles racing around on the track below.
After more than four complete stadium revolutions the Mexican Wave’s energy dissipated - as the sun began to set behind the surrounding Tennessee mountains – but not before it reached a final destination point of world record glory!
