Most kites flown simultaneouly
On 9 August 2008, Kristian Teufel, Guinness World Records adjudicator was in St Peter-Ording at the sea coast in Northern Germany, to adjudicate a record attempt for the most kites flown simultaneously.
The attempt was originally scheduled to take place on 10 august but due to the predicted rain which was forecast for that day it was brought forward.
Nevertheless, on the day of the attempt, the weather did not look promising as it still looked like it would rain, and the organisers feared they might not be able to break the record after all. Luckily, the sun came out and eventually enough volunteers arrived to participate in the record attempt.
The organizers of the event, Nestle-Schöller, gave each participant a number and a free kite upon registration. The beach was divided into 20 squares, each designed to hold up to 70 people. According to the number given at registration, the participants then proceeded to their allocated square. In each square was a volunteer who counted the participants and ensured the kites were being flown throughout the attempt.
At 3 o’clock in the afternoon, everything was ready and after the signal kites began to fly. Due to three volunteers not hearing the signal, Mr. Teufel had to subtract the people in these squares from the total.
However, after some calculations and with a total of 710 kites flown simultaneously He was able to announce that a new Guinness World Record had been officially set!
It was a day full of fun for both volunteers and participants as well.
